In January 2012 BASF announced that it is concentrating its plant biotechnology activities on the main markets in North and South America. The company adjusted the site footprint of its subsidiary BASF Plant Science. As a consequence SunGene, the site of BASF Plant Science in Gatersleben will be closed by the end of 2013.
SunGene was founded in 1998 as a joint venture of BASF Plant Science , and the Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK). Later, SunGene was totally owned by BASF Plant Science and established itself as one of the largest plant biotechnology companies in Germany.
